Raven Reflections

Morgan turned off the main trail onto a faint footpath.

“Morgan, why did the Shadows start appearing?”

She sighed and gathered her thoughts. “Forty years ago a fireball streaked across the sky. Many people believed it was a message from God. Others believe the devil sent it. Either way, it hit the ground near Câmpulung. The fiery stone left a hole and once it cooled a young man named Alexandru Basarab claimed it in the name of his family. Alexandru is a half-cousin of Dmitri Basarab.” Morgan scratched her head. “A month later, the first Shadows appeared.” She pointed to the rings they wore. “The raven is made from a piece of that stone, along with the other raven rings that are out there.”

“Who made the rings?” Raven stumbled over a tree root.

“Lady Raven made the arrangements. She never told me who the ring smith was.”
