I had plans for the day. Great plans Instead, I’m stuck cleaning out the attic of my Great Uncle Billy. He never talked much about his youth, but everyone felt he hid something important. I open another trunk of junk. Tossing aside the old clothes to the discard pile, my hand brushes against a something dry and leathery. Curious, I look inside the container. Holy crap! Is that a finger?
I pull out a small bag and sure enough, I see finger sticking out of the neck. The bag slipped from my shaking hand and hits the floor, spilling its contents. A clink reached my ears and my eyes glued to a gold coin. I snatched the object up, along with a rolled up piece of parchment. I can’t make out the markings on the coin.
I shove the object in my pocket and carefully unroll the parchment. Lines of a map fill the sheet, but the writing is in Spanish, something I don’t know how to read. With a shrug, I place the parchment in another pocket and stare at the hand on the floor. With trembling hands, I grab the dried out item and shove it back in the bag.
With my unusual treasures, I head back to the first floor to think things through.
