Writing Tip — 59

TapTapTap. Psst! You! Hey, you! Come over here! I have a great secret to tell you. Don’t be afraid, I don’t bite. Now that I have your attention, I have a something to tell you about writing. You ready? Here it is: There is no secret! You heard me right. There is no secret to writing. Writing consists of picking up a pen and writing down your thoughts, or allowing your fingers to tap across the keyboard. That’s it! How hard can it be? You can talk to thousands of authors and ask them what their secret is to getting a story on the page or filling the screen with words. Simple answer, they sit down and they write.

They might be writing personal essays, an outline for a new story, a novel, or a collection of flash fiction. No matter what, they are sitting at their desk and writing. They don’t whine and groan, saying there’s nothing to write about. A true writer can write about anything. The world is full of ideas and a writer uses those ideas to create their stories. They don’t sit and wait for inspiration to strike; they go after it with a net to catch it. That is the real secret of writing.

  1. i agree. Ideas are everywhere, and someone who WANTS to write will find something to write about. However, you said, “A true writer can write about anything.”

I think a better way to express this would be, “A true writer can always find something to write about.” Saying that someone is not a True Writer unless they can (and do) write about literally ANYTHING is… not a good idea. Unfair, even. Are authors who specialize in a single genre or a small number of closely related genres not true writers, then, because someone who writes cozy mysteries may not also write military thrillers, erotica and funny short stories? Would you ever tell someone (or even just think it) that they’re not a true writer because they write nonfiction but not novels, poetry, and screenplays, too?
