“That was amazing! What is that place and what are the shadows there?” She swayed and braced herself on the bed.

Morgan grabbed the filled cup and held it out. “Drink this.”

She accepted the cup, held her nose, and drank. “Yuck.”

“You will get used to it after a while.” Merla stretched her wings.

“Ha! Don’t believe her. You never do and I’ve been drinking it for years.” Morgan accepted the empty cup and stood. She grabbed the bottle and the other cup. “Let’s go to the kitchen and have pie and tea. I’ll answer your questions there. After that, we need to set the wards around the property.”

Eva placed pieces of pie in front of them, along with cups of tea. Morgan took a few bites and drank some tea. “In answer to your first question, the place we were in is called the Court of Passage. That’s where the Shades of the dead go before they pass through the other archway to the land of the dead.”

“Are there only the two arches? From what I could see, there was no real end to the Court.” Raven lifted a large forkful of pie.

“There are several other archways leading to different places. We try to avoid them.”

“We ravens don’t like going through the other arches. It’s dangerous to cross and come back,” Merla said. “May I have a bite of your pie, Raven?”

Morgan broke off a piece of the pie and set it on the table for Cail. “Go ahead, Raven. They enjoy the same food we eat.”

Cail hopped to the table and snapped up the tasty morsel. “I’m going to the kitchen and pester Eva for berries.” He hopped off the table and went through the doorway.

Raven copied Morgan. “I guess it makes it easier to take care of them this way.”

“Yes.” Finished eating, she leaned back and propped her feet on another chair.

“You told me about the Court, now what about the Shadows I saw? Why did some have a silver glow surrounding them and why were some glows brighter than the others were? Why did some have no glow?” Raven drained her cup.

“First you need to know that the ones with the bright glow are called Shades. They are the recently deceased and ready to pass through the archway to the land of the dead. The Shades with the lesser glow are blocked from passing through either archway.” She took a drink. “There could be several reasons for this.”

Eva entered the room and refilled their cups. “Those birds will eat all the berries. Should I give them smoked ham?”

“Yes, they need to rebuild their strength too. I don’t suppose there’s any pie left? I still have the taste of the tonic in my mouth.” Morgan crossed her ankles.

“I’ll bring out another piece for each of you.” Eva patted Raven’s shoulder and returned to the kitchen.

“What would block the Shades from crossing?”

“Killed in ritual sacrifice by a high-ranking member of the Order of the Shadow Dagger. I’ll explain that later. Some don’t want to cross, feeling they haven’t finished things in this life. Sometimes they cross back to our world and become ghosts.” Morgan glanced at the timepiece on the shelf. “When Eva brings the pie out, hurry and eat. I want to place the wards before sunset.”
