Chapter 15

“I see the two of you are settling in to your new office.” Grant took a seat at the table. “I’ve spoken with Serena and she needs to know the people you have seen here at the Archive with that particular aura. Ryan Jones is one, who else have you seen it around?”

“A Scryer, sir.”

“Lennie?”

“She saw the aura around Stan Myers.”

“Has she met Lynda Myers yet?”

“Yesterday.”

“She didn’t have the outline and neither did anyone else in the Scryers’ office,” Nickie said.

“That’s a relief. I think the Head Archivist will have you check everyone associated with the building, Nickie. If someone has a black aura, I doubt that’s a good thing.”

“Yes, sir.” I hope This will be after we explore the building. I don’t want to miss out on that.”

“An Archivist in the making.” He stood and headed for the door. “I’ll leave the two of you to your work.” He turned back. “Nickie, start keeping track of when and where you see others with this aura.”

“Yes, sir.”

“I’m not sure I like all this attention, Lennie.” Nickie wandered over to the window. The afternoon sun reflected off the buildings and in the distance the water glistened.

It took Jay a moment to pick the lock to Lennie’s apartment. Once inside, Gillian disabled the alarm. “Remember, the only thing we are after is notebooks that have writing, old books and anything that looks out of the ordinary. “ A quick glance around the living revealed nothing of importance.

“What about the books on the shelves?” Jay followed her down the hall.

“Forget them; Mr. Aston specifically said handwritten journals and any flash drives.”

Book shelves, desk drawers, and closets were turned inside out “Son of a bitch! Where are the journals?” Gillian threw an ashtray against the wall.

Jay found the safe but had no tools to open it. “I don’t suppose you came across the code for the safe?”

She tossed aside a box of paperclips, the contents scattered. “No. I wonder if I could change my name and move to a different country? Mr. Aston is not going to be pleased. Let’s get out of here.”

#

That’s enough for today.” Lennie tossed aside the empty box and stretched. “The rest of the books can wait.”

“Fine with me. What now?” Nickie looked through the bags Shannon had brought her. “I hope you will explain what all this stuff is for.” A roll of canvas revealed a variety of tools.

Lennie joined her at the table. “Put the gear back in the bags. After we retrieve the journals and artifacts from storage, we’ll head home.”

“Holy shit!” The chaos in the study weakened her knees. “Nickie, go check your room.”

Shannon’s words came back to her. ‘I’ve heard there have been break-ins and the only things stolen were old books, journals, and weird-looking items. She set down the items she carried and entered the room. “Good thing I had all my important stuff at the Archive today.”

“Nothing was touched in my room or your bedroom.” Nickie joined her. “Are you going to call the police?”

“No. I think this is related to the robberies Shannon mentioned. This is going to take forever to clean up.” She stared at the papers from the file cabinets scattered on the floor.

Nickie put an arm around her. “Want me to order dinner from the diner? Then the two of us can eat and clean this up.”

She gave her a quick hug. “Good idea, Nickie. I’ll have a burger and fries. I better call Brant and let him know about this.” She picked her way through the mess and sat at the desk.

Nickie wiped her fingers on her jeans and resumed sorting the documents from the file cabinets. “I’m glad you have the documents coded to match the folders they belong in. Makes it easier to put them away.”

Lennie placed four more books on a shelf. “It’s something Brant taught me. Seems he had mishap one time with a stack of files. Took him forever to get everything sorted out.”

An hour later, Lennie stood and stretched. “Let’s stop for the night. Thank you for helping, Nickie.”

“I wish I could work faster, but sometimes I get distracted by what’s written on the papers.”

“Squirrel!” Lennie grinned. “Come on, let’s watch some TV and have a snack before bed.”
