Some days when working on a story the words don’t seem to flow. No matter what you do, everything reads like crap. You end up hitting the delete button more than the save button on days like that. As you sit in front of your computer, you think ‘I need to write, but nothing is working. What should I do?’
Take a step back, take a deep breath, and work on another aspect of the story. Do a character interview or a short piece about one of the characters that never will appear in the story. Write up dossiers of your characters. Just keep writing. If the story takes place in a certain area, do a write up about that area, what is found there, who lives there, what does it look like. These items won’t likely appear in the story itself, but it sets the region firmly in your mind.
Doing character interviews are a lot of fun. This is a great way to get inside your characters’ minds. Give a bit of background and description of the character, where did they grow up, what are their fears, hopes, dreams. You can post on your blog or website. Let the readers get to know them as well.
There is always something to work on when it comes to your story, just keep writing.
May the words ever flow!
