Doubt

There you are, typing away, fingers dancing across the keyboard. The story flows onto the screen and you are on top of the world. “This is easy!” you think as another chapter ends and you start the next one. Suddenly, a whisper begins in the back of your mind. A faint thought and your fingers slow. As the voice gets louder, you stop and listen. Ignore that voice! Ignore its seductive tone. You are a writer, so stay at that computer and continue writing. Keep the words flowing and move that plot.

The voice you hear is doubt. ”Who am I fooling? I’m no writer. Who will want to read this crap? Why am I wasting my time when I could be out with friends or playing a game?” Every writer at some point gets caught by this voice and they stop writing. We do question our ability to tell a story or to complete a novel. This is normal, but do not stop writing. That is the worst thing you can do. Tell doubt to go to hell or take a hike, but don’t follow its suggestions. You have chosen to be a writer, so continue that task. Finish your first draft, set it aside for a while, but work on another story or a personal essay. Keep the creative process going.

May the words ever flow!

  1. Great advice and quite helpful. As we say a writer is the onevwho can understand the other.

  2. Reblogged this on Don Massenzio's Blog and commented:
Some encouraging words. What separates indie authors from traditionally published authors…we get to keep more of our royalties and we can go directly to our readers…write on!
