The Archivist — Chapter 17

Chapter 17

Lennie’s attention split between the room and Ryan. I wish I had selected someone else to do the photography. I don’t trust him any more. Sifting through the trash near the door, she stopped at a glint of silver. I think I’ve found another piece. With care, she withdrew the object and studied it in the light. More runes and several lines were evident. “Shannon, I found another piece.”

Her friend joined her. “I wonder what those lines are for? A picture, A map?”

She photographed and recorded her find. “Who knows? If it is a map, that would prove interesting. Did I mention I found a map drawn below the runes in the other room?”

“Somehow that slipped your mind.” She sat on the floor. “”I wish this place was air conditioned. I don’t like how the air smells and the humidity is killing me.”

“I noticed that the first time I was here. There’s something different about this building, but I have no idea what it could be.” She stood. “Let’s take a break. James, break time!”

Nickie sat on the sidewalk by the cooler writing in her journal. “It’s not much cooler out here, but there is a slight breeze. I’ll get back to work after I finish this and have another cigarette. How long will we be working today? With no electricity in the building we’ll have to rely on flashlights and the lights on our helmets.”

Lennie grabbed a Gatorade. “Good question. I say we work until dinner time. We’ll take a lunch break around noon, and then work through the afternoon.”

“Do you want to check out the sewer entrance today or wait until tomorrow?” Ryan joined them.

“I’ll check out the first hundred feet that leads toward the building,” James said. “We need to see if these new GPS trackers work underground.”

James and Ryan moved aside the manhole cover, drawing back as the stench rose. “I’m glad you volunteered, James. With the rain we had, it’s not going to be pleasant.”

“Maybe we should let the Apprentice check it out.”

Lennie rested a hand on Nickie’s shoulder and gave a squeeze. “Ignore him. He a horrible sense of humor.”

“I could accidentally brush up against him and knock him into the hole.”

“Tempting as that may be, it would be wrong.”

“Ryan believes he’s a comedian. James and I listened to him at those open-mike nights at the bar. No one laughs, yet he keeps on trying.” Shannon opened her bag. “James, let’s test out these new wireless cameras too.”

“Good idea. I’ll use the microphone too. Lennie, any final instructions?” He clipped the items to his vest.

“If you do find anything unusual, let us know Watch your step and stay on the walkway.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He kissed his wife.

“Watch yourself down there, James. If you get wet, you know it takes forever to get rid of the sewer smell.”

“I know. I’ll be careful.”
