Character Interview — Lenara Lenquil
Anna: Today we’re joined by Lenara Lenquil, the main character of The Archivist. Thanks for being here, Lenara.
Lenara: Thanks for having me.
A: So you’re the main character in The Archivist — Lenara Lenquil Adventures.
L: That’s right.
A: What is an Archivist?
L: Archivists are people with a unique ability to quickly learn ancient writing and translate documents that are discovered in ruins, donated home libraries, and the like. We also have perfect recall for what we see and read.
A: Are you born with the ability?
L: I was, others were changed during the Tarhak comet fly-by last year. The comet seems to have enhanced my ability for direction and drawing what I see. This comes in handy when I’m exploring ruins.
A: What happened on the day when the comet skimmed earth’s atmosphere?
L: The comet was previously undiscovered when it started the approach. There were the usual doomsayers proclaiming it was going to hit the earth and destroy all life. Four months after it was discovered, it skimmed the atmosphere. I was in my office at The Archive, going through some old journals that were donated by an estate. The building began to shake and…
A: And what?
L: It’s a little hard to describe. The air wavered. It was like looking around the room through water. Made me feel sick. There was a yellowish green light everywhere and I could hear other people yelling and screaming. The shaking, strange light and wavering lasted about ten minutes. I huddle under my desk, hoping I wouldn’t throw up. By the time everything settled down the air felt heavy, sort of hard to breathe.
A: Wow! I think I would have fainted or died of fright.
L: A number of people did die. Lost several friends that day. They were about my age and their heart just stopped.
A: I’m sorry for your loss.
L: Thanks. Once things settled down the Head Archivist Raymond Jones called a meeting. We learned that twenty five members of The Archive died and another sixty were injured by falls or stuff falling on them. We also noticed a number of people had altered features. They now had light violet eyes and silvery blond hair. They were in a state of shock and immediately transported to The Archive Clinic.
A: What happened to the ones who changed?
L: It seems they had a new ability called Scrying. They can use their personal energy to learning things about people and things. Brant likes to call them human lie detectors, since they can tell if a person is lying or telling the truth. They use a large clear quartz crystal to boost their ability.
A: How were you feeling after all this?
L: The truth? Scared out of my wits. My former Keeper Brant Grellan stayed near me during the meeting. He’s more like a father to me than my own father ever was.
A: What’s a Keeper?
L: A Keeper is someone at The Archive who ‘adopts’ another person, making them their apprentice and an eventual member of The Archive.
Brant’s the one that brought me into The Archive when I was 14. Because I’m a lesbian, my parents sent me to one of the Conversion Centers to cure me. I escaped from that place six times. The final time I managed to make it to the city. It was pouring rain out and I was huddled under a bench trying to keep dry. I didn’t realize I was on The Archive grounds. This was before they built the stone wall with new security measures. Brant found me and took me into the building, bought me something to eat, and gave me dry clothes. I still have the sweatshirt with the logo on it. He brought me to the Head Archivist and said I was to become his apprentice. I was tested, and immediately accepted because of my natural abilities. I lived with Brant until I was eighteen.
A: What happened to the rest of the world?
L: People went missing, ruins appeared on the outskirts of cities. Strange shadowy creatures have been encountered. There was a pandemic that killed a lot of people too. In some countries, there were riots and governments overthrown. The US locked down it’s borders during this time. The government passed a number of laws making The Archive and the Scryers high priority. If something strange appears at a crime scene, we can take over. The police don’t care for this too much, but they hate the weirdness even more, so they pretty much accept the situation.
A: Did you get sick?
L: Yes. It was like pneumonia only worse. I felt like I was on fire and couldn’t breathe. My heart stopped once for four minutes. Twice I stopped breathing. Brant stayed with me the whole time I was at the Clinic. Once I was released, it still took me another month to recover my strength.
A: What is the purpose of The Archive now?
L: To find out what happened and why it’s happening. That’s our main purpose now. Why have these ruins appeared? What civilization do they belong to?
A: Lenara, thank you for this fascinating interview. I hope to speak with you again.
L: It’s been a pleasure, Anna. I hope to come back with interesting stories for your audience.
