When you’re writing a story, you’ll inevitably come to a point where you’ll need the reader to know something about the character’s past. Usually you can just add small facts and snippets about a character’s backstory and it will be fine. Sometimes, however, you’ll come to a point where the reader will need to know a lot more than snippets.

This is where flashbacks work so well. They fill more gaps than snippets could and they do wonders when done correctly. They do so much more than just provide information. That’s why it shocks me when I hear some writers tell other, less…
