Writing A Compelling Backstory

Writing a compelling backstory is one of those things in fiction that you either have to do or can leave out completely. You could have a character with a dark and tormented past, or you could not.

If you want your character to have a compelling backstory, you’ll need to give it more than just a few seconds of thought before diving in. Not every story needs a character to have a deep backstory, but having one where it’s poorly executed will do more harm than good.

In this post I’ll attempt to highlight a few considerations you’ll need to make before actually writing said backstory. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but I feel like you should be fine if you at least pay attention to the following points.
